When is an adult order of protection necessary?

Family and divorce court trialDomestic violence is still a problem in some society.  In many marriages and relationships, parties can have disagreements or differences of opinion.  But in some marriages, these disagreements or differences of opinion can take on a different dimension.

Unfortunately, in some relationships, the dynamics can turn violent.  In these cases, a party may reasonably fear for their safety.  This can be the case based on actual violence or even threats of violence that cause somebody to fear for their well-being.

In other cases, a party might be the victim of stalking or harassment.  With stalking, a party might be followed from place to place without their consent.  In some situations, the stalking might be frequent phone calls or texts that are at an inappropriate level and content.

Harassment in certain situations can also rise to the level of an order of protection.  This isn’t always the case, but in some situations, the conduct and communication can risk to a level when somebody reasonably fears for their safety.

In these cases, it’s important to be safe.  It’s important to ensure that you are being protected and do not have to live in fear.  This is why it can critical to talk to an attorney about the possibility of filing an Adult Order of Protection (often referred to as a Restraining Order).
