Cathy earned her Bachelor of Science in Crime & Delinquency from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. After graduating, she completed a practicum internship at the Douglas County Youth Correctional Facility where her duties included editing the guard work manual, accompanying officers on probation visits, and supervising community service work projects. Cathy then earned her Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. In her last semester of law school, she interned at the Washburn University Law Clinic. She worked on domestic cases such as divorce, paternity suits, and child in need of care cases filed in Shawnee County.
Cathy started her career as an Assistant Public Defender at the Sedgwick County Public Defenders Office in Wichita, Kansas. Her responsibilities included preparing for and trying cases for indigent defendants charged with felonies in the State District Court. From there, she joined the State of Missouri Public Defender system in Liberty, Missouri, where she worked for 14 years. Her work consisted of meeting with clients, preparing pre-trial motions, arguing probation violation reinstatement, and preparing and filing motions to suppress evidence and motions to dismiss. She has a wide range of courtroom experience and has represented clients from many backgrounds. In her eighteen years working as a Public Defender, Cathy has first-chaired 48 jury trials, second-chaired 17 jury trials, and she has prepared and argued 4 bench trials. She enjoys utilizing her experience and knowledge to mentor less experienced attorneys. Cathy is currently licensed to practice in the state of Missouri.
When not working on cases for clients, Cathy enjoys reading, listening to music and being with family and friends. She is also a foodie, and loves good, rich food.
