When parents separate or divorce, one of the most important financial issues is child support. Each state has its own formula, guidelines, and worksheets that courts use to determine the appropriate amount of support.
To help you better understand how child support may be calculated in your state, we have compiled links to official court-approved guidelines, worksheets, and calculators across all 50 states and Washington, DC.
These resources can provide a helpful starting point in understanding what child support may look like in your situation.
How Child Support Is Calculated
While every state has its own laws, most child support calculations are based on similar factors, including:
- Each parent’s income
- The number of children involved
- Parenting time or custody arrangements
- Health insurance and childcare costs
- Other allowable deductions or credits
Many states follow what is known as the “income shares model,” which estimates the amount parents would have spent on the child if they were still together. Other states—like Texas—use a percentage-of-income model.
Courts generally treat these guidelines as a starting point, but judges may deviate from them depending on the facts of a case.
