Katherine completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She went on to earn her Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law. While in law school she completed internships for the Estate Planning and Drafting Clinic and the Midwest Innocence Project. She also worked as a law clerk for a firm in Kansas City, where she worked with attorneys and partners on drafting motions, preparing answers to petitions, drafting discovery requests, and attended hearings and trials. She is currently licensed to practice law in the states of Missouri and Kansas.
Prior to joining Stange Law Firm in Topeka, Katherine Phelps worked as an attorney in both Missouri and Kansas. She began her career in Kansas City for a debt collection firm representing creditors in suits on notes, guarantees, and other instruments of indebtedness. Handling a large caseload, she worked on drafting and reviewing petitions, motions, garnishments, and settlement documents. She moved on to a firm that represented real estate investors and creditors in cases that pertained to landlord/tenant relations, collection, and other real estate related matters. During her time there, she attended hearings throughout Missouri and Kansas, including anywhere from 5 to 20 bench trials per week. This included coordinating and overseeing meetings and settlement discussions among parties, negotiation of settlements, monitoring compliance, and maintaining case databases. Most recently, Katherine worked as an associate attorney representing business clients in a wide variety of civil litigation matters.
When she is not busy assisting her clients, Katherine enjoys cooking, hiking, and camping. She also enjoys spending time with her family, her young son, her two cats, and her dog.
